Each 40ml sachet has 25g of carbohydrate in a 2:1 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose. The two take different routes through the gut wall, so your body can take on more fuel per hour than glucose alone allows. Maltodextrin does most of the work, so only 9.9g of the 25g is sugar.

There is 50mg of caffeine and 125mg of sodium in every sachet, both printed on the pack. Three gels is 150mg of caffeine. Easy maths.

Cola Noir is lightly flavoured and not overly sweet, which is worth something at the point in a long run when sweet things stop being welcome. Twelve sachets covers a marathon and the long runs before it.

Light On Purpose

Smooth texture, easy on the stomach, lightly flavoured and a convenient tear away tab that stays attached so you don't have to litter.

  • Easy tear-away top

The notched top tears off in a single pull, with no fumbling. The tab stays attached to the sachet, so there is no loose scrap to drop on the road or the trail. Open one in training so the whole motion is second nature on race day.

  • Smooth Going Down

A smooth gel, not a syrup or honey. It goes down cleanly (without water) when you are breathing hard and the last thing you want is to chew or swallow something thick. Take it with a few sips of water and carry on.

  • Made To Sit Lightly

Two carbohydrate sources (maltodextrin and fructose) use two routes through the gut wall, so more of the fuel is absorbed and less is left sitting in your gut. Research links 2:1 blends with better stomach emptying at higher intakes.

  • Lightly Flavoured

Cola Noir is lightly flavoured and not too sweet. The flavour is light on purpose, so it is still welcome at hour three, when flavour fatigue usually starts to set in.

How To Use Lúthri Energy Gels

One to three gels an hour, planned before the start line. Here is how to find your number.

Two carbs, two routes

Glucose and fructose cross the gut wall through different transporters. The glucose transporter starts to saturate above about 1.2g a minute, roughly 72g an hour. Fructose has its own, so adding it lets more carbohydrate through.

Lúthri uses maltodextrin, a chain of glucose, and fructose in a 2:1 ratio. A 2025 meta-analysis of 14 randomised trials in 125 endurance athletes found the glucose and fructose blend raised the rate at which ingested carbohydrate was burned as fuel by about 0.27g a minute, compared with glucose alone. Earlier work reported rates up to 65% higher.

Why two carbs may sit better than one

Gut symptoms are common in endurance exercise: bloating, cramping, nausea. Glucose and fructose use different transporters, which raises absorption and fluid delivery. In one comparison of 8.6% solutions at 90g an hour, the glucose and fructose drink emptied from the stomach faster and delivered more fluid than glucose alone. In another trial, stomach fullness did not rise over five hours of glucose and fructose at 90g an hour, as it did with glucose alone.

Fuel Is A Plan, Not A Reaction

Waiting until you feel flat means you are already behind. Carbohydrate taken on a schedule keeps the supply steady. Carbohydrate taken in a panic arrives late.

Pick a rate you have practised: one gel an hour, two or three. Set a timer. Take them at the same moments in every long session, so race day is a rehearsal and not an experiment.

Fuel is a plan. The gel is how you carry it.
